Movies: The Family Of Superheroes Return In “Incredibles 2”

As Disney-Pixar’s “The Incredibles” adventure came to an edge-of-your-seat finale, Syndrome was foiled—thanks to baby Jack-Jack and an ill-advised cape—and his jet exploded into a firey ball, destroying the Parr family home. But the family was more bonded than ever; Violet showed off her new-found confidence, and Dash discovered that second place would do just fine. It seemed like a happily-ever-after ending until someone called the Underminer declared “war on peace and happiness.”

Nearly a decade and a half later, fans will learn the fate of the Underminer when Disney-Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” opens in Philippine theaters on June 13.

When “The Incredibles” first burst onto the big screen, Mr. Incredible’s super strength and Elastigirl’s stretchy flexibility wowed audiences around the globe—the film grossed more than $633 million worldwide, earning an Oscar® for best animated film. But according to writer/director Brad Bird, it wasn’t the characters’ powers—or the villains—that fueled the film’s success. “I realized that the crime-fighting aspect of the story didn’t interest me nearly as much as the whole family dynamic,” he says. “I think that people see themselves in these characters and that’s why they fell for them the way they did. ‘The Incredibles’ and now ‘Incredibles 2’ are really stories about a family.”

Movies: Unbreakable Bond Between A Boy And His Dog IN Ayala Malls Cinemas’ “Isle Of Dogs”

Fox Searchlight Pictures and Indian Paintbrush bring together an all-star voice cast (Koyu Rankin,  Greta Gerwig, Yoko Ono, Frances McDormand, Live Schreiber, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, Jeff Goldblum, Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johansson, F. Murray Abraham, Tilda Swinton and Harvey Keitel) in Wes Anderson’s endearing breakthrough stop-motion animation “Isle of Dogs”  that will exclusively open in Ayala Malls Cinemas  on May 30.

“Isle of Dogs” is a grand adventure in set in a near-future Japan in the grips of a canine crisis and mass anti-dog hysteria where a boy tries to find and rescue his dog in a place known as Trash Island.  The story, with its chatty canines, furred femmes fatales, a boy aviator, an intrepid school reporter, mutant viruses, mythical isle and step-by-step unraveling of a big human mistake, developed over time and innumerable cups of tea.

Taking the primary human role of Atari Kobayashi, the heartbroken Japanese boy who makes a heroic flight to search for his lost dog, is Koyu Rankin, a young Canadian actor who is bilingual in Japanese and English.  Only 8 years old at the time of recording, Rankin makes his feature film debut in the role.  Says Rankin of why Atari risks everything to search for Spots:  “Atari’s dog was basically his best friend.  Spots is all he ever had, and since he is an orphan, Spots was like his brother, basically.  He’s determined to find him, so that’s why he takes the plane and runs away from home.”

Movies: “Deadpool 2” Now On Its Third Week In Phillipine Cinemas

Bearing a prohibitive R-16 rating, “Deadpool 2” continues to dominate the local (PH) box-office as it stands to play in more than 100 screens on its third week of release.

With its unique take on the superhero universe, the Merc with a Mouth played by Ryan Reynolds who also co-wrote the sequel, has heart in its core despite its R-rated humor and action. It’s a character that’s been kicked and knocked down, and life’s been tough on him, as a character with cancer and this terrible scarring on his face. “I think kids related to Spider-Man because it was a nerdy little kid, and then he put on the mask and he was this amazing super hero. And I think people tap into Wade Wilson because they see a character whose life has been tough and he somehow overcomes it all, laughs about it and wins in the end. I think people really relate to that,” says co-writer and executive producer Paul Wernick.

What makes the movie stand out further from the rest of the superhero movies is that “Deadpool 2” is filled with an assortment of nasty antagonists, but there is no one main villain. Wernick says, “Deadpool’s a character who breaks all the rules, he breaks the fourth wall. We, in turn, do the same. “Deadpool 2” doesn’t have the traditional mustache-twirling villain. It’s an unusual structure. We want to set up the audience to believe that Cable is the actual villain and it’s going to be Cable versus Deadpool. Ultimately, that doesn’t turn out to be the case and they team up.”

Photography: Baby Photoshoot: Laurisse

We love taking photos of your babies!

With three older Ate's, Issi's mom has her hands pretty full but that's not an excuse to make sure that she has a great Christening celebration up ahead. We were tapped to do a baby photoshoot at the comfort and convenience of their home, for photos to be printed for the reception and here are some of the photos. :)

No need to go to the mall to have your own baby photoshoot done!

As a mom, I know how much energy goes through getting your baby ready to leave the house, it is like a production number with all the things that you need to bring, as well as the costumes and props for the shoot but if you can have the photographer go to your home instead-now that would definitely take a load of what you have to think about!

BONUS MATERIAL

While Paul was trying to get the exposure for the photoshoot, Issi's Ate came along and was curious about all the excitement. Paul asked her to join the test shots :)

I belong to a trio of sisters (feeling Charmed ones) LOL and it is a unique bond which can't easily be described, you grow up being protective of each other yet also being conscious and competitive at the same time. You argue about borrowing each other's clothes and shoes and beauty paraphernalia but you still do it anyway.

No matter what happens, it doesn't matter how many years pass by, or how many boys may come along the way, you always come back to that familiar bond that only those of you in that special circle understand. Shout out to my sisters~unfortunately you have one sentimental, cry baby for an 'ate'.

I know Issi or her sisters may not know it yet but they are also part of that special bond and sisterhood and it is a beautiful thing, indeed.

Movies: Get To Know The Characters In “Solo: A Star Wars Story”

Lucasfilm’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story” which tells the origins of the legendary Han Solo is now playing in Philippine cinemas.  While Han is not only the title character but also the anchor of the film, it’s really the relationships that he forms over the course of his life that make him a well-rounded and interesting figure.

Below, let’s meet the colorful characters in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and get a glimpse of how they shaped Han’s destiny.

Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich). For young Han Solo, times are tough under Imperial rule. He makes his way as a reckless street thief, working for a notorious gang on Corellia, which is headed up by an ill-tempered crime boss. After an arduous stint as an Imperial mudtrooper, Han calls it quits and finds that he is very comfortable reinventing himself and traveling in the company of scoundrels around the galaxy.

Movies: Kick-Ass Ladies Rob The Met Gala In “Ocean’s 8”

Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter team up in Warner Bros. Pictures’ new action adventure “Ocean’s 8” in Phiippine cinemas June 13.

It’s been more than 10 years since an Ocean-led crew has conned their way to millions of dollars.  Now a new gang is banding together to carry out the ultimate heist.  But this time, it’s Debbie Ocean (Bullock) masterminding the plan, and she’ll only require eight supremely skilled women to pull it off.

Director/screenwriter Gary Ross says, “The outlaw trope has always been at the heart of American movies, but with few exceptions, those ‘outlaws’ have been men.  I was intrigued with the idea of a group of kickass women laying claim to this genre that had always seemed off limits.  Plus, I love heist movies—always have.”

Photography: Baptism: Ser Jacob

For some reason, I stopped blogging about the different event coverages and photo shoots that we (or Paul rather) does. Not that it was planned or anything, things just got busy (most probably) and while, we have been blessed with a number of commissions for the past few weeks, I realized that I should also get back to writing about them. So here I am!

First, we have Ser Jacob's Christening; I'm not sure if his full name is a shout out to how
George R.R. Martin wrote the "Game of Thrones" books, as someone who has read the books, I know that 'Ser' is how the knights were addressed in the book~if that is the case then creativity points go to his parents!

I wasn't so sure about what to write about the event, given that I wasn't even there but as I was looking through the photos, I realized how as a parent (naks!) time is indeed a fleeting moment. Just earlier we were  buying clothes for Luke and I realized that before we used to buy small newborn clothes for him and now we're buying clothes for 9-12 months! (huhuhu)

I suddenly missed how small Luke was before, he's big now and wrestles his poor mom. Have you seen his legs?! Just one leg drop will make you catch your breath! He also has this habit of throwing his full weight on you and just landing on you-completely taking the breath out of you (and not in the good way).

So yes moms and dads, hold your little ones tighter and longer, smell their baby smell and treasure it. Make sure to celebrate the little things as well (includes Baptism) and always make sure to have beautiful photos taken to capture these moments~that will be over before you know it!

Well what do you know, my sentimental side got the best of me (as it always does) and I was able to reflect and write about an important reminder from Ser Jacob's lovely baptism photos! Thank you Mommy and Daddy for trusting us and here's to more and more happy memories!

Review: SOLO: A Star Wars Story

If there is something that Star Wars has given its fans, is its many lovable, memorable and morally ambiguous characters-one of which is the scruffy, nerf-herder-Han Solo! Now, we really don't know much about the dashing smuggler, as we first meet him as a pretty established (and cocky) pilot in Ep. IV "A New Hope" -trusty sidekick Chewy included.

SOLO: A Star Wars Story looks into changing that by introducing us to a young Han Solo as he leads his own stand alone movie. The audience will be treated to the beautiful story of how one of most iconic duos in history (Han Solo and Chewie) met and how they met Lando Calrissian (Dany Glover) as well as come to own, the one and only Millenium Falcon. Its a fun and thrilling space adventure that has long been overdue!

While there has been 'much ado' about the casting of Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, since Harrison Ford has become the character and like a double edged sword this has meant that some fans may not see any other actor playing the character but given the impossible shoes that he must fill, I must say that Ehrenreich does a pretty good job considering he carries the whole essence of a beloved character on his shoulders. Of course, he gets help from a strong supportive cast, the rich environment and landscape of the Star Wars universe, and I'm not just talking about the different landscapes of the numerous planets but the rich stories that we have enjoyed and loved over the years but so many others waiting to be told as well-just like this one!

An exciting heist movie from start to finish, "Solo" stays away from all the "Jedi mystery" and family drama; while bringing its own unique flavor to the space opera saga.

Escaping the slums of his origin, Han Solo wants nothing more than to be the best pilot in the galaxy and he will stop at nothing until that happens. Finding himself caught in one compromising position after another, he gains a trusty sidekick in the Wookie, Chewbacca, a few friends and enemies along the way (he still has to figure out which is which) and a choice that he has to make, which will mark his destiny forever.

It's 'get in, get the goods and (try to) get out' plot is easy enough for even the casual movie goer to enjoy; and is probabbly one of the good things about the movie. You don't have to think too hard about it, you just have to sit back and enjoy it. If you are a fan of the franchise-enjoying all the references is an added bonus.

Loved that we get to see the beginnings of the Han & Chewie 'bromance', impressive performances from supporting cast members - Emilia Clarke and Donald Glover. Although the Kessel run could have been more edge of your seat. The rotating train was fun though.

I would have to give props to Alden Ehrenreich's attempt on taking on the impossible task of playing a young Han Solo (no one can deliver that swagger like Harrison Ford does). Ehrenreich's gets satisfactory marks on my book and if you can cut him slack and check your expectations at the door, you might enjoy the film as much as I did.

8/10 - Solo: A Star Wars Movie, may not be as serious as its namesake but it may just surprsie you and may be just the thrill ride you need after a long and tiring week at work.

Review: Lost In Space (Netflix)

Molly Parker as matriarch and aerospace engineer Maureen Robinson and
Toby Stephens as former U.S. Navy SEAL John Robinson,

I'm not one to complain about remakes or reboots, especially if its a story or a franchise I haven't had the chance to sink my teeth into. So I welcomed with open arms, Netflix's latest re-imagining of  the 1960's family science-fiction series "Lost In Space". Which is also a re-imagining of the classic novel "The Swiss Family Robinson", which I haven't read yet, I don't know if I ever will but its a nice little trivia to know.

Having established that I have yet to read or know anything about the original material, to which the series is based on, I had no idea what to expect and its a nice treat going in. Told following a general plot with some flashbacks here and there, Netflix's "Lost In Space" is a refreshing family adventure science fiction, where its cool to be the smartest person in the room, where the younger characters in the story are used to their full potential. Its great that they are not just emotional, angsty teenagers who sulk in a corner but who actually contribute knowledge, expertise and think in the story.

Much of the series' success should be credited to the strong family unit (The Robinsons) and to each of the characters who make up the family. As well as the impressive costume and production design which makes you feel like you are watching a big budget movie. You really do feel like you are on a beautiful and dangerous alien planet, where the flora and fauna will easily kill you.

Parker Posey as Dr. Smith, a sociopath who uses and manipulates the Robinsons to ensure her own survival.

After a celestial object crashes into the earth, threatening the survival of humanity, the process of colonizing a new world, known as Alpha Centauri begins. The Robinson family is among the few chosen for the 24th mission to the Resolute, a spacecraft which carries chosen families to colonize Alpha Centauri. However, before they reach their destination, an alien robot attacks the Resolute, which forces some of the families to escape and crash land to a nearby habitable planet. Now they have to battle and survive an unknown planet with its strange new environment while trying to get back to the Resolute. As if that wasn't hard enough, they also have to face off personal demons, family drama, fellow colonists who may be friend or foe and a sociopath who will stop at nothing to ensure her survival.

The story is moved with family drama (because, what family does not have some sort of drama or skeletons in the closet right?) as well as thrilling science concepts that can kill you and save you. (That high pitched "I love you" after using helium to escape what could have been a sticky situation, will always be one of my favorite scenes.)

An alien robot who seems to be having an identity crisis and a young boy trying to find his place among his family of over achievers (it actually happens more often than you think).

There has been mixed reactions from critics on Parker Posey's portrayal of the show's antagonist, Dr. Smith. I personally hate her, with a passion and I guess for me, that just means her portrayal is really effective.

An easy binge watch from start to finish- "Lost In Space"  has yet a lot to explore, which is why its no surprise that Netflix has renewed the series for a second season! More on that here! We really need more of these family oriented adventures, just so you can enjoy a weekend of Netflix with your family.

8.5/10.

Movies: Fan-Favorite Han: Meet The Beloved Hero Of “Solo: A Star Wars Story”

Lucasfilm presents “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” charting the adventure-filled past of Han Solo, the iconic galactic scoundrel and one of the most beloved characters in cinema history. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo will meet his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounter the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that sets the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy, describing what makes Han Solo such an iconic and beloved character, says, “He’s very authentic. He’s a scoundrel, he’s a maverick, and there’s a mystery to him. Handsome, incredibly charismatic and adorable—that’s a pretty great combination for a Star Wars action hero.”

Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan was hooked the moment he found out the film was about Han Solo, the character he is most passionate about in the Star Wars canon. “Han was always my favorite, right from the start,” says Kasdan. “He’s the most exciting guy in the saga for me. He’s unpredictable. He’s reckless. He’s not brilliant. He’ll say things that he can’t back up. He’ll leap in when he should stay back. There’s nothing more attractive to me than a screw-up who’s actually got a good heart but hides it as best he can.”

Movies: Zazie Beetz: Domino Of Luck In "Deadpool 2"

Zazie Beetz as Domino in Deadpool 2.
Deadpool comic creator Rob Liefeld is a fan of his character’s movies. “Ryan made “Deadpool” a little dirtier. He brings that extra-edgy material that works. He’s perfect for it. They’ve taken great liberties with the R-rating and I think it found its own niche. I’m thrilled that there’s this different muscle that Fox gets to work out,” enthuses Liefeld.

“I am an artist who wanted to write because I got control of the content of my visuals,” continues Liefeld. “That’s where the battle is won - the visuals win the day in terms of cool. I still turn my head at a cool “Deadpool” drawing, whether I drew it or not or if I see him in real life. That red and black looks magnificent. While “Deadpool” spans comic books to actions figures, The best version is what they’ve done with these films because they’ve put the utmost care and love into them and they haven’t betrayed the comic. They take some liberties, but they’re sticking true to the sources, and they should, because there is a fan base out there. X-Force is the second best-selling comic of all time. I thought that would not stand. Twenty six years later, now I know it’s never going to fall.”

Review: Deadpool 2

Can you guess from which 80's movie this was inspired from?

When Deadpool first came out in 2016, it pushed the envelope fpr R-Rated Super Hero films. A gamble, which meant a potential loss of revenue by missing out what a younger audience can bring in. This, in exchange of making the fans happier by staying faithful to a character's story and personality.

Well, needless to say 20th Century Fox's gamble paid off, with the first Deadpool movie earning over $783 million and even beating out other super hero films in box office earnings. It has also become the overall highest-grossing R-rated film.

While the film gained both financial and critical success, its plot was pointed out as being too formulaic and simple. Something which Deadpool 2 has been able to remedy by putting Deadpool right in the middle of the wrath of a Mad Titan--er a time travelling mutant rather, Cab;e, played by Josh Brolin (who also plays Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War), hence the reference. Something which you would surely get a lot of in the movie, as Deadpool mercilessly alludes to every possible superhero and pop culture reference you can think of.

Josh Brolin as Cable.

Definitely BIGGER than its predecessor, "Deadpool 2" brings 'the merc with a mouth' to a CRAZIER adventure as he struggles to find his place while rescuing a young mutant, leading a potential superhero team, all the while fighting off an intense mutant from the future!

Following a more complicated, surprising and unexpected plot than the first film, while still delivering its unique brand of humor and action sequences "Deadpool 2" gives a lot to laugh about and a few (BIG) surprises to enjoy as well

Some jokes and gags may run longer than they should and unfortunately made me a little bit anxious but everything is forgiven in the end, given how bold and daring this reluctant hero has become.

Girl Crush. Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Ryan Reynolds continues to be the charming yet annoying antihero and Josh Brolin was impressive and enjoyable as the gritty and deadpan Cable. Zazie Beetz as Domino is a welcome addition to the team, I wouldn't mind having her powers.

Its rare for sequels to be better than their predecessors but 'Deadpool 2' gets it done, with nothing but the world for him to conquer, you will surely continue to enjoy the guilty pleasures of this antihero.

Leave the kids at home, this one is rated R-16 for a reason.
