Movie News: Tywin Lannister is Dany's employer in "Me Before You"

So my Thronie (Game of Thrones fan) and cinephile is beyond ecstatic upon the upcoming "Me Before You" movie. I mean, not only is the Mother of Dragons (Emilia Clarke) a real girl (you know, falls in love and gets weak in the knees over a guy and does not have to deal with slavery issues and claiming the Iron Throne) in the film but 'father of the year' (Randal Tarly only comes in second) Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) is also in the film.

He plays Stephen Traynor, who employs Lou Clark (Emilia Clarke) to look after his son.

Let's get to know more of the characters, shall we?

Lending creative and emotional support to the lead stars of New Line Cinema's “Me Before You” are three actors: one on the verge of stardom, two are established stars on their own right. They are Stephen Peacocke (“Hercules”), Charles Dance (HBO's “Game of Thrones”) and Janet McTeer (“Insurgent”).
Me Before You” is based on the critically acclaimed, bestselling novel by Jojo Moyes. The story revolves around Will Traynor (Sam Claflin) whose world, at one time, was all-encompassing; he lived a “no limits” lifestyle. Now, two years on, we find him utterly confined. Betrayed by his own body due to a spinal cord injury, he resides at his parents’ countryside home. Lou (Emilia Clarke), on the other hand, has rarely stepped outside this little town, and even stepping into the grand Traynor estate—the “castle,” as it’s called by the locals—is foreign to her. Yet they meet, whether by chance or by fate.
Though Will was very social at one time, the only mainstay in his life when Lou comes along, apart from his parents, is his nurse/occupational therapist, Nathan. Amidst a solidly British cast, Aussie actor Stephen Peacocke plays the role.

Nathan functions as Will’s carer, or occupational therapist, or nurse, whatever you want to call it,” Peacocke offers. “But in the scheme of things, he’s probably been with Will the longest out of just about anyone since his accident, and they’ve got a kind of friendship as well. At the end of the day, Nathan’s the bloke that Will can talk to about things.”
To aid both Peacocke and Claflin in preparing for their characters’ interactions, Peacocke says, “We had some lovely occupational therapists come in to help us. Someone in Will’s condition can do virtually nothing for himself; the little things we take for granted like scratching your nose, stretching, getting in and out of the chair, are things that Nathan has to do for Will, so there’s a lot of trust that exists between the two lads. The great thing about the script was that, wherever possible, there was a bit of humor in the way these two fellows work together. They can have a joke about things, and Will’s got a pretty sharp wit, so I think Nathan enjoys the experience.”
Will's mother, Camilla Traynor, strives to temper her motherly concern with characteristic English self-control, though she’s still coping emotionally with what happened to her son. His father, Stephen Traynor, primarily wants what any parent wants for their child: to live a life that makes them happy. He simply realizes, better than his wife, that Will may have reached his limit on that score. To play the couple, the filmmakers cast veteran stage and screen actress Janet McTeer and distinguished actor and filmmaker Charles Dance.

The reason I like the story is that it’s multi-facted,” McTeer says. “It’s not just a love story between these two; it’s also about life and the many things that make that interesting. “It’s also very English in terms of it’s about class and how we can all make assumptions about people based on that.
It’s a substantial, moving story, but there are a lot of laughs along the way,” says Dance. “When Louisa comes in to this not-so-easy setup, she brings a kind of eccentricity with her; she’s a bit wacky. But she also keeps Camilla’s hopes alive that Will will change his mind. My character, however, is past that point and has accepted what his son wants to do and, as much as he hates the idea, will help him do it.”
Director Thea Sharrock says that both actors’ performances “are incredibly moving. They managed to capture the shared pain of what the Traynors must be going through…those moments when a parent realizes that what he or she wants is not necessarily the best thing for the child. That sometimes you have to let them do what they think is the best thing for them,” she concludes.
Me Before You is a presentation of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM). Set for release across the Philippines on June 15, it will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

Movies + Music: Updates on the "Me Before You" Soundtrack

One of the things that makes me so happy is when a movie has a kick-ass Original Soundtrack that comes along with it, one that makes you dance in your seat in the cinema (one of my favorite things is when I see a kid literally getting up from their chair in the cinema and dancing to a music playing in the film-that just makes my 'pusong mamon' flutter) and makes you cry buckets of tears.

If you've been following the blog then you probably know that I have been looking forward to the soundtrack of the upcoming movie "Me Before You" as much as the film itself.

And now I have MORE DETAILS! ->

ME BEFORE YOU Original Motion Picture Soundtrack  TRACKLISTING

1. Max Jury "Numb"
2. HOLYCHILD "Happy With Me"
3. X Ambassadors "Unsteady" (Erich Lee Gravity Remix)
4. Jessie Ware "Till The End"
5. The 1975 "The Sound"
6. Jack Garratt "Surprise Yourself"
7. Cloves "Don't Forget About Me"
8. Ed Sheeran "Photograph"
9. Imagine Dragons "Not Today"

I mean look at that tracklisting! It's so beautiful I can just cry!

I wrote about X-Ambassador's "Unsteady" -you can read more on that here

The 1975's "The Sound" is my favorite track from their new album "I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it." (video above) and in case you have been hiding under a rock, the boys are coming back to Manila to perform for "In The Mix" - I really hope I get to see them perform, I already missed their two earlier concerts and Panic! At the Disco is in the line up so please, please concert gods be good to me. :)

The music in New Line Cinema's sentimental romance “Me Before You” was carefully interspersed with the film’s score, created by composer Craig Armstrong, to evoke the romantic and provocative sensibilities of the story.

Craig’s music and the songs we were able to find have a huge impact in the film,” director Thea Sharrock says. “They really resonate with what’s happening between [the lead characters] Louisa and Will at every turn and every stage of their relationship.”

The film's Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available to download/stream via digital stores starting June 3. Get the CD for only Php 459.00 at Astroplus/Astrovision stores starting June 10. -Don't forget to mark that on your calendars! I know I will :)

Set for release across the Philippines on June 15, “Me Before You” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

Movie News: SIA and Composer Thomas Newman PROVIDE `UNFORGETTABLE' MUSIC FOR “FINDING DORY"

I love Sia! And "Unforgettable" is such an iconic song! Looking forward to this!

The "Sia" wig on Dory is a nice touch don't you think? :)

Disney-Pixar's “Finding Dory” welcomes back to the big screen Dory, friends Marlin and Nemo—and composer Thomas Newman. “To me, he was one of the cast members of ‘Finding Nemo,’” says director Andrew Stanton. “We formed a close relationship ever since, and now that he is behind the score for ‘Finding Dory,’ it fees like the last member of the family has arrived at the reunion.”
According to Stanton, scoring a film like “Finding Dory” with a composer like Newman takes the films to places he has yet to imagine. “It forces me to have to really explain out loud what my intentions are. It can lead to very intense conversation between the two of us. But I get so much out of it. I end up understanding my movie ten times better—it’s almost therapy for me. We just click.”

“There was no way I could not do “Finding Dory,” says Newman, who was nominated for an Oscar® for his work on “Finding Nemo” and won a Grammy® (best song written for motion picture, television or other visual media) on Stanton’s “WALL•E.” “It’s ironic that a movie about fish—some in aquariums, some in open water—has such a huge range of emotive possibilities—from the hysterical to the deeply profound and primally frightening. That’s exciting to ponder musically.”

According to Newman, the score is designed to support the film’s big themes of loss and the characters’ efforts to conquer their individual shortcomings. It also showcases the deeper, less sunny side of Dory’s personality. “Dory’s theme has a certain amount of quirkiness and a certain amount of sadness built in,” says the composer.

The goal, says Newman, is to complement the story. “If there’s humor or pathos, I want to bring it out, but I don’t want to re-describe it. I just want to underline it. I want to make it more of what it already is.
“I liken music to makeup on a face,” continues Newman. “At its worst, it’s garish and overdone. At its best, you don’t notice it and it brings out the best qualities.”

Singer-songwriter Sia is on board “Finding Dory,” performing the film’s end-credit song, “Unforgettable.”(Watch Sia sing “Unforgettable” for the first time at http://youtu.be/fMVlYk6uNB0).
American songwriter Irving Gordon wrote the song in 1951, and in 1992 won a Grammy® for it when Natalie Cole included the tribute to her late father on her album of duets. “Unforgettable” remains revered worldwide today.

Five-time Grammy® nominee Sia agreed to sing the song when the voice of Dory herself made the request. “Dory's story makes me teary,” says Sia. “When Ellen asked me, I couldn't refuse!”
Director Andrew Stanton has long been a fan of the native Australian performer. “In the same way Robbie Williams did his own unique twist on a classic song for ‘Finding Nemo,’ Sia captures the soulful truth of the Nat King Cole classic ‘Unforgettable,’ and makes it all her own,” said Stanton. “They are a perfect complement to one another, just like the two films.”

Disney•Pixar's “Finding Dory” finds Dory living happily in the reef with Marlin and Nemo about a year after their life-changing adventure. When Dory suddenly remembers that she has a family out there who may be looking for her, she recruits Marlin and Nemo for a life-changing adventure across the ocean to California’s prestigious Marine Life Institute (MLI), a rehabilitation center and aquarium.

In the effort to find her mom and dad, Dory enlists the help of three of the MLI’s most intriguing residents: Hank, a cantankerous octopus who frequently gives employees the slip; Bailey, a beluga whale who is convinced his biological sonar skills are on the fritz; and Destiny, a nearsighted whale shark.

Deftly navigating the complex inner workings of the MLI, Dory and her friends discover the magic within their flaws, friendships and family.

“Finding Dory” swims into Philippine theaters on Thursday, June 16. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures. Movie News: EMILIA CLARKE FINDS LOVE IN “ME BEFORE YOU”

I love Emilia Clarke and I can't wait to see her in this role, which is so different from Daenerys in "Game of Thrones", she seems to be such a cheery person in interviews and even her Instagram posts are hilarious. Which is why I think she is well suited for the portray Lou in the upcoming, highly anticipated, bring-in-the-waterworks "Me Before You". Book review here

British actress Emilia Clarke takes a 360-degree turn from her famous Mother of Dragons character, Daenerys, in “Game of Thrones” to portray the wide-eyed, endearing Louisa, in New Line Cinema’s heart-tugging romance, “Me Before You.”

“What drew me to this movie were the words of Jojo Moyes, the book first and then the script,” explains Clarke. “I was hooked on page one and so excited to play a character with such charm and sincerity, who is so authentically and brilliantly British, and with such a lovely arc in her story.”
With no clear direction in her life, quirky and creative Lou works hard as a waitress in a small café in order to help her family make ends meet. “Louisa is a happy-go-lucky, very content girl,” observes Clarke of her character. “When we first meet her, she is working at The Buttered Bun Café, serving tea and scones. She’s very good at it, she loves the clientele, and we see she’s a sweet kind of caring girl who just wants to do well.”

But times are tough and Lou is let go. Knowing her income is as crucial as her skill set is minimal, she tells her local job placement agent that she’ll happily try anything. Her naturally cheery outlook is put to the test, however, when she faces her newest career challenge as caregiver and companion to Will Traynor. A once robust young man, he became wholly dependent on others due to an accident two years prior, and his whole world changed dramatically in the blink of an eye.
Director Thea Sharrock says, “Lou lives with her parents, her sister, her grandpa and her nephew in a very small house in a very small town. But her mum doesn’t have a job, Granddad doesn’t have a job, and Dad now doesn’t have a job, so her small income is a very big deal. Yet her outlook remains a sunny one.”
To find an actress who could play positive under pressure, the filmmakers cast a wide net. “We saw hundreds of girls, and I had Skyped with Emilia about the role, but I can honestly say that when she walked in to audition and did her first scene, it was literally like Lou was in the room,” Sharrock recalls. “There was no question. Her energy was exactly right; like Lou, she was just a breath of fresh air.”
Clarke had an easy rapport with the first-time feature director. “Thea is just the greatest, I love her. You’d never, ever, know that this was her first film,” she declares. “It’s a testimony to her intelligence, her integrity and her work ethic that working on this project, with its very tricky subject matter, felt almost effortless. She was so giving and always had a smile and a laugh to put us at ease, and that trickled down to everyone. I never felt like I was working.”

Based on the critically acclaimed, bestselling novel by Jojo Moyes, New Line Cinema’s and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ “Me Before You” stars Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”) and Sam Claflin (“The Hunger Games” movies), under the direction of renowned theatre director Thea Sharrock, making her feature film directorial debut.

Oftentimes you find love where you least expect it. Sometimes it takes you where you never expected to go…

When Louisa Clark—Lou, as she’s known—unexpectedly loses her waitressing job she must scramble to replace the income that her tight-knit family depends upon. Desperation drives her to take a job as a caregiver to Will Traynor, a man who used to be a wealthy banker with an adventurous soul, living life to the very fullest, but for whom those days are in the past. After a tragic accident, Will lost the desire to live and now keeps everyone at a distance with his caustic, overbearing attitude. But unlike his family, Lou refuses to tiptoe around him or cater to his moods. In fact, her sparkling personality and easy nature are hard for even Will to ignore, and soon enough each becomes exactly what the other needs.

Set for release across the Philippines on June 15, “Me Before You” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

The film's Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available to download/stream via digital stores starting June 3. Get the CD for only Php 459.00 at Astroplus/Astrovision stores starting June 10.

Opinion: For the love of music: A tribute to Lance Garcia and Ken Migawa

(c) To the Owner of the Photo.

When news of the untimely deaths of five party goers during Close Up's Forever Summer started appearing on my timeline last May 22, 2016 I was in shock. I mean, talk about a party gone wrong. Immediate speculation points to drug overdose.

As someone who frequents the local music scene (albeit a different genre) I can't help but miss the point (is there even one?!) of having to use drugs "to enhance the concert experience". I've never used drugs in my life and not just because I'm actually a nurse by profession (I know, talk about a career shift) so I know how it fries your brain and affects your body but I would rather have that pure, unadulterated experience with the music. Now, this is not a 'holier than thou' post I just needed to get my non-existent history with illegal drugs out there. Despite my constant exposure to live music, I often have the cheapest thing on the menu and an iced tea or a soda (I'm not even fond of drinking alcohol, even if it's free) during gigs and shows.

I posted on my timeline about wanting to write about the incident and going along the lines of the recent paragraph above and going along the lines of "For the love of music-don't use drugs!"

I didn't get to writing this opinion piece until now which I'm glad was the case (for the first time my unconventional and busy schedule led to the evolution of this piece). A few days after the "Close Up Incident" I started getting news that Lance Garcia, who was one of those that died was active in the local geek community. My friends were friends with him and took to Facebook to express their sadness on his untimely death but aside from being sad, they were angry because Lance was a father (the same age as Paul) who left children behind. Lance did not use drugs, his friends even went on national television to attest to this.

Lance was cherished by his friends so much, that my timeline was filled with his smiling face (and odly the caption "Hail Hydra" -an inside joke I believe) looking back at me. There was so much love for this person whom I never had the chance to meet but maybe we were under the same roof for a Toy Convention at one time or another) that I simply couldn't write "(Ugh!) These people using drugs to enjoy music-" and judge and preach. I simply could not do that, there was so much loss and sadness already.

Updates on the case, which has become a national concern reported that the NBI was looking at three angles that caused the deaths: drug overdose, heatstroke and even poisoning.

The autopsy report of Lance and another victim showed a massive heart attack as well as a number of major organs being affected.

Lance may not have died of a drug overdose but we can't deny that the use of illegal drugs in concerts and music festivals is a reality. A friend who was at the event said that there were a lot of concert goers who were already under the influence as early as midnight and that some teenagers were even lighting up Vicks Inhalers and using that to get high.

We can point our fingers and blame the event organizers but there is also something that we can do.

Let's make it a point to be vigilant in events like these. Don't be afraid to report anything or anyone suspicious and make sure to look after each other. Check on one another and see that everyone is hydrated and if you see someone who doesn't seem to look well, seek medical assistance immediately. Keep an eye on your food and drinks as well.

It may take some time until the results of the official investigation come out (a suspected drug dealer was already arrested) and even then we may not know the entire truth about the incident but it still doesn't change the fact that five people died that one night one of them, Ken Migawa was only 18.

He went to school with my brother and even went to the house for a school project to interview Paul on photography. He was the same age as my brother when he died. Ken will never get to graduate College, he will never get a first job or his first pay check and just thinking about that sends waves of sadness and loss all over me. He had his whole life ahead of him and he died-for what?!

They all died at a place where the love of music was supposed to bring people together, a place to enjoy music, to dance and to celebrate life.

In a place, where summer was supposed to last forever, five young lives were lost. Some may say it's their fault for dabbling in drugs and some may say that they were victims of something bigger and more sinister but I say that all of this is our loss. Whether we knew the victims personally or are within their seven degrees of separation, it is our loss because the darkest and weakest side of human nature won that night.

Yet I refuse for that darkness win the fight. I will unsheathe my sword and bring out my shield, this dark side of human nature will not triumph. It will not stain music and the pure feelings and emotions it brings out in live events. I refuse to let that happen and you, my dear reader can help me in that fight.

Let's do it for Lance and Ken.

Let's do it for the love of music.

Movie News: TOM HANKS IN THE FACE OF RECESSION IN “A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING”

Award-winning actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks stars in “A Hologram for the King” set in recession-ravaged 2010 as an American businessman named Alan Clay adapted from the book of the same title by acclaimed author Dave Eggers.

Hanks’ role in the movie is a broke, depressed and freshly divorced man who arrives in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

to close what he hopes will be the deal of a lifetime. His mission: sell a state-ofthe-art holographic teleconferencing system to the Saudi government.  Adrift and alone in an unfamiliar land, Alan befriends taxi driver Yousef (Alexander Black), who chauffeurs him through the desert to the “King’s Metropolis of Economy and Trade,” a surreal ghost town of vacant skyscrapers and half-completed construction projects. Baffled by the bureaucratic reception he gets at the so-called “Welcome Center,” Alan struggles to figure out why his small IT support team is being forced to spend its days in a sweltering tent as it preps for the big presentation. Worse, because of the Saudi way of doing business, he’s unclear if the king will ever show up for the long-scheduled meeting.

Clay arrives in Saudi Arabia without any prior knowledge of the place, other than his own cartoonish, stereotypical concept, according to Hanks.  “Though he’s not a happy guy, when Alan tries to sell the upbeat nature of the 3-D hologram and rally his team, he becomes this other guy, the former Alan Clay, a man with energy and vibrancy. That’s where the comedy comes from.”

In addition to emphasizing the book’s humor, Tykwer bolstered the romantic elements as he translated Eggers’ story from page to screen. “The longer I worked on the script, the more profound the love story became because it connects to this whole third-act decision where the movie becomes a more optimistic tale,” Tykwer says.  Alan is coaxed out of his funk by Zahra Hakem, an alluring, talented surgeon portrayed by London-born Sarita Choudhury. In her role as CIA Division Chief Saul Berenson’s long-suffering wife Mira on the Emmy-winning series “Homeland,” the half-Indian, half-English actress developed an avid following that included Hanks himself. “I remember seeing Sarita for the first time on ‘Homeland’ and thinking, ‘Alright, I don’t know who she is, but that  woman is riveting. I don’t know where she comes from but I can’t take my eyes off her.”

In Hollywood’s finest black-comedy tradition, “A Hologram for the King delivers laughs spiked with bittersweet undertones. “We’ve made a crisis comedy that points the finger at the fact that our economic structure is falling apart and the apocalypse seems to be looming just around the corner,” Tykwer says. “We use comedy as a tool to embrace tragedy like a balloon you stick with a needle so it explodes and the energy that comes out is cheerful. Despite all of

Alan’s problems, I hope this movie cheers people up.”

For Hanks, who’s earned iconic status and five Academy Award® nominations by playing regular, good-hearted Americans who triumph overhard luck circumstances, A Hologram for the King is the story of a man who stumbles upon an emotional and spiritual oasis after wandering in the desert. “Why make a movie about a guy where nothing ever works out for him? That might work fantastically as a piece of literature but as far as the cinema goes, the story requires this other thing — for want of a better word, let’s just call it hope.”

“A Hologram for the King” opens June 1 in cinemas from OctoArts Films International.

Movie Review: Term Life

This is one of those instances where the movie poster screwed the movie over (excuse my French). You see, the poster makes it appear as if "Term Life" is another take on the Liam Neeson-bad-ass-dad-rescues-kidnapped-daughter "Taken", when in fact they are two very different movies.

There are two possible reactions to the movie poster. It's either a) "It's another 'Taken' rip off (scoffs) I'm not seeing this" or b) "Hey! It's just like 'Taken'-let's go see it!" -either way, it's really unfair to the film. So I don't know what the layout artist was thinking when the layout was made for the movie but by the looks on the comments section on Social Media, you can see that majority of the reactions is a). Which just goes to show the importance of a movie poster.

The tag lines in the poster say: "His Daughter is Taken. Saving her, will take a special set of skills." First of all, no one is "Taken". Vince Vaughn creates plans for heists and jobs, which he sells to thieves. When a job goes wrong, he is on the run and takes his estranged teenage daughter (with boobs) with him. So see? So far away from "Taken".

Term Life takes a while to warm up at you (if it ever does) and I honestly thought it was a bad B movie. It has it's good parts around some rough patches but was still watchable.

People might get confused as to whether this is an action and/or comedy, especially with Vince Vaughn, in a bad wig, is in the lead. But remember his performance in Season 2 of HBO's "True Detective" ? So yes, Vaughn has more in his sleeve than just comedies.

In Term Life, Vaughn (Nick) is a calculating architect for heists and robberies, he delivers this in a Mac Gyver -(Robert Downey Jr.) Sherlock kind of way. When a recent job Vaughn has sold goes wrong, he is on the run and takes his estranged teenage daughter (Hailee Steinfeld)  Cate with him.

Much of the movie, focuses on the father-daughter relationship, which starts off as difficult since Cate has never spent really known her father. Although Nick has always thought of his daughter, sending the income from plans he sells for Cate. It is hilarious and touching how the two seemingly stumble around each other and try to catch up for all the time lost.

While the father and daughter enjoy ice cream while plotting bakery robberies, there are of course outside forces who hold Nick responsible for the botched job. Pretty soon the Mexican cartel, corrupt cops and a shotgun-wielding Sherrif are after Nick and Cate.

5 out of 10 for me, mostly because there is little if no chemistry at all between Vaugn and Stenfield.

If you are fans of both actors and of the TV Show "Empire" you should go and see the movie.

"Term Life" is now showing in cinemas.
